Four Ideas to Overcome in Hydroponic Gardening
Along with all of the enthusiasm that we hear from a wide range of indoor and greenhouse growers, we also get an earful once in a while about some of the most common reservations of those who would rather not delve into this kind of gardening project. However, more than a few of these concerns could be called ‘myths’ in that they are not necessarily based on fact. Here are some ideas that hydroponics fans have been able to dispel about what it takes to grow fresh, tasty plants indoors.
Hydroponics is Messy
More than a few potential growers have been turned off by the idea that a hydroponics garden might really mess up their indoor space in a home or office. While it’s true that the nature of hydroponics involves a lot of biological materials, new kinds of grow chamber and grow box designs can effectively keep everything where it needs to be and minimize the mess that goes into caring for plants indoors.
Hydroponics is 24/7
Again, plants do need a specific environment to thrive, but with today’s advanced monitoring and troubleshooting resources, growers don’t have to spend every hour carefully tending to their plants. More sophisticated equipment allows for less labor-intensive gardening without sacrificing the quality of the results.
Hydroponics is Only for “Cash Crops”
Some people also have a very limited view of what’s possible with a hydroponic garden. Refuting this idea is as easy as pointing out how quickly and easily sweet potatoes, radishes and other simple vegetables can grow in a simple and cheap hydroponics installation.
Soil-Based Gardening is Much Easier
While it may seem easier to rely on the soil to grow plants, the reality is that soil-based gardening also takes a lot of hard work. Also, there’s another side to this equation, which is that open-air gardening doesn’t provide the same kinds of opportunities to micromanage plants and keep them alive in harsher conditions.
