Hydroponic Gardening: Is a Corner Big Enough?

Posted

We’ve talked to all kinds of growers about all kinds of hydroponic projects, and within the greater category of people who are enthusiastic about growing vegetables and other plants inside of a home or commercial space, there is a much smaller category of “micro gardeners” who often seem obsessed with the idea of gardening in smaller and smaller spaces. As an excellent example, let’s take the idea of a “corner garden.”

What Is a Corner Garden, and What Is It For?

It’s no secret that much of the increase in hydroponic gardening is based on the idea that folks just don’t have a lot of space where they can cultivate plants. The old traditional soil-based model was practiced for many hundreds of years, in times when there was a lot more outdoor space available, and property wasn’t so expensive. People didn’t live in megacities or suburban areas congested with traffic and cut into postage stamp yards. But now many of them do, and that means that those who still want to grow their own food have to make do with smaller and smaller spaces.

A corner garden takes up just a small square footage at the corner of a single room. One typical idea for a corner garden is to simply install a hanging pot for a hanging hydroponics garden that can be planned as part of a multi-use solution for a room. These corner hanging gardens can be situated for access to sunlight from a nearby window, fed with small irrigation tubes, and otherwise integrated into a room or space. By anchoring these hanging gardens from a ceiling, the grower is still able to utilize all of the floor space of the room, while still keeping a corner free for gardening.

Another alternative to the open corner garden is a small grow box or grow chamber design. These compact solutions can provide everything that plants need, and they fit easily in the corner of a room. While they may take up several feet of floor space, they are still very capable of fitting into a multi-use plan for an interior space. That’s part of what makes these designs so popular for a wide range of gardeners.
