Hydroponics In Your LEED House
In many American communities, there is a significant trend in making homes more energy efficient and generally ‘greener’ – but this type of movement actually seems to be emerging in a variety of ways. Some home builders and those who are financing new building construction are focused on the technical aspects of energy efficiency and sustainability, using guidelines from LEED and other best practices to design homes that actually save energy. Along with this kind of approach, some designers may also be looking to incorporate a kind of ‘green theme’ that complements these ecological goals with an attractive visual design.
Building Hydroponics Into Homes
Hydroponic gardening can do very well in the junction between technically green building goals and those interior design ideas that are essentially decorative. Hydroponics is green in that it provides food for the table through a sustainable process, but it also dovetails very well with some of the style choices in a lot of the green homes that you might see, for example, in catalogs and promotional materials.
In some cases, homeowners are building hydroponics into specific areas of the house, such as the kitchen, where a small chamber can double as a countertop or appliance space. Other kinds of gardens, like hanging gardens, can be situated anywhere in the home.
These kinds of ideas are part of what’s driving the general increase in the attention around indoor gardening with complex grow boxes, grow chambers and similar systems. For more, ask your retailer about what property owners are building into new designs, and what kinds of systems work most efficiently with a given kind of residential construction.
