We’ve talked a good bit on this blog about sealing light for light/dark cycles in a hydroponics project, but when it comes to tightly controlling where sunlight or artificial light falls, there are some other considerations that may not get the same kind of attention from some growers. One of these relates to the fragile ecosystem inside the hydroponics reservoir: if you haven’t thought about how to seal light out of your reservoir or nutrient storage container, read on and think about whether your system is vulnerable to certain kinds of problems.
Algae and Other Residue
Your reservoir or nutrient storage environment is kind of like a petri dish. Within this murky interior, there are algae spores and other elements that are quite ready to grow. The key to preventing these kinds of buildup is to keep it dark below deck, but with some kinds of hydroponic systems. This is easier said than done.
Simple Tools for Light Control
The small items that you will need to keep the layout of your hydroponics reservoir kopasetic are some of some of the most basic and least expensive items that you will ever buy for your greenhouse or other hydroponic garden. Essentially, you can easily seal light out with any opaque medium. That includes simple vinyl or neoprene mesh products, as well as the mylar that’s also often useful for the interior of a grow box or grow cabinet.
Take a look in your hydroponic retailer’s catalog for some of the simple gear that you can use to troubleshoot hydroponics problems before they begin. It’s all part of great sourcing for the projects that will get you the best green harvest at the end of a plant cycle.
