There’s lots of advice out there on what kinds of grow media to use for hydroponics. Growers choose from a wide range of items like rock wool, vermiculite, pellets and other kinds of solutions for plant pots. However, according to some experts the situation is easy to diagnose and there are few common types of plant media that are usually superior to others.
The Bottom Line: Sterile Plant Media
The essential principle for setting up good plant pots is that hydroponics grow media needs to be sterile. It needs to be made up of inert organic materials that will hold seeds and water effectively without changing over time. Simply put, it needs to be clean and consistent.
Many kinds of plant media support this principle. However, some can be better than others in different hydroponics grow scenarios.
Plant Media and Drainage
A lot of different results with different sterile plant media involve how these substances drain water. That’s why we would recommend using a couple of denser elements like coco coir and hydroton for some areas of a plant pot, and others like perlite or engineered light pellets that drain better for others.
Combining different media can have a good effect on a hydroponics garden. For more, check out the range of resources that Dealzer offers in our retail store and other parts of our products web site.
