Why you are what you eat (your skin is replaced every month by the food you eat)

Posted

We've talked a lot about some of the most common reasons to do hydroponics, but other interesting arguments for this innovative type of gardening have to do with obscure science that not all of us are aware of.

One of these ideas is connected to that old saying “you are what you eat,” and a lot of us get this on some intuitive level, but we don't really understand how the body gets revitalized by the nutrients that it takes in.

Your Body is Younger Than You Think

If you're in dismay about being 40, 50 or 60 years old, take comfort -- your body isn't really nearly that old.

For a while now, scientists have known about how the body replenishes itself constantly. For example, take the skin. We know that existing layers of skin are always sloughing off of our body at a microscopic level, and new layers developing underneath. If you could put your skin under a microscope, you would see that this process is always happening -- new cells are being made to replace old ones.

Because all of this happens where we can't see it, we pretend that we always have the same skin. We say things like “I'm comfortable in my own skin” and think about it as a constant. But it's really dynamic; it's changing all the time.

The same goes for all of the many cells in the body. They're not static -- they change.

Hydroponic Nutrients

That's where nutrients come in. What we eat has an effect on how our cells develop. That's why doctors always warn us about junk food and how bad it is for us. High amounts of fat and sodium or other kinds of chemical elements can have a negative effect on the body as it grows. And if you've read the above, you understand: the point is that you don't stop growing at age 18. You always need quality ingredients to feed your body.

Hydroponics helps, because it allows you to grow food in a way that is sustainable, and allows you to monitor the growth of your food. Otherwise, you're dependent on an outside process that doesn't always have your best health in mind. As supermarkets ship more and more produce longer and longer distances, and cram it with more and more preservatives, more people are thinking about using a hydroponic strategy to develop local food that they can trust.

For more, look at all of the neat tools and accessories you can get from modern hydroponic manufacturers and distributors to make your hydroponics dreams a reality.
