5 Ways to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient in 2022

Posted

Energy efficiency is something that has moved from being a rare thing to commonplace with everyday homeowners now embracing ways to cut down on their energy consumption, do their part for the planet, and even save money in the process. It’s no longer just a neat concept, it’s something that people understand is necessary and are now finding as many ways as possible to embrace.

If you want to do more in terms of energy efficiency in your home here are five tips you can use for 2022 that will have a significant impact.

Use Ceiling Fans to Maintain a Comfortable Temperature

Keeping a comfortable temperature in the home year-round is something that many homeowners appreciate. Often that means turning the heat up or setting the air conditioning cooler to maintain a steady temperature.

Did you know that using ceiling fans year-round can save on energy consumption and yet allow you to maintain a very comfortable temperature? They do an excellent job at moving the air around, and even pushing it down from the ceiling so you don’t have to keep adjusting the thermostat.

Install a Smart Thermostat

And speaking of the thermostat, here’s a way to make your home more energy-efficient and smarter. You can install a smart thermostat like an Emerson Sensi Smart Thermostat. These thermostats allow you to program the desired temperature based on the day of the week and time of day. You can set a specific temperature based on the day of the week and even the time of day. Look for a smart thermostat that also features a companion app so you can make adjustments remotely.

Use Cold Water to Wash Clothing

Homeowners who haven't yet embraced the cold water cycle on their washing machine, it's time to give it a try. Using cold water to wash your clothes uses much less energy and it’s gentler on your clothing. It won’t cause fading and or stretching like warm or hot water will. Just be sure to purchase laundry soap that is suitable for the cold water cycle.

Another energy-saving tip for washing clothes is to wait until you have a full load to wash. This will cut down on the number of loads you do; the machine should run a full load at a time to ensure balance in the drum.

Switch to LED Lights

This tip was a big a couple of years ago and most people likely embraced it then. If you haven't yet made the switch to LED lights, it's time to do so. The savings are huge, with LED lights using 70%-90% less energy than incandescent bulbs. They also have a much longer lifespan.

Use Large Appliances in the Evening

Finally, get into the habit of running your large appliances (washing machine, dryer, and dishwasher) at night during the off-peak hours. Depending on your energy provider, they may offer a price break during off-peak hours.

The Savings Add Up

Once you start to embrace energy efficiency and use a variety of tips, you’ll see the savings will start to add up fast.
