Carbon Filters Explained
What is a carbon filter and how does it facilitate a grow project?
Carbon filters are often sold with grow box setups and other hydroponics kits. These types of filters are effective odor blockers, because they work at the particle level to control various elements of organic compounds as they move through the filter.
How Carbon Filters Work
With carbon filters, many small particles of carbon work together to provide a large surface area where contaminant particles get trapped before moving beyond the filter. Experts call this process ‘adsorption,’ which is scientifically defined as the adhesion of atoms or particles to a surface.

Uses of Carbon Filters
Carbon filters are often used in water filtering, because they can remove any of the leftover items that aren't fully removed by municipal wastewater treatment process. For example, a carbon filter can trap chlorine molecules, removing a chlorinated taste from water.
Carbon filters are also used in some types of air handling. In hydroponics, they are often used to prevent aromas from escaping the grow box or grow space.
Why Use Carbon Filters?
Part of the philosophy behind including carbon filters in hydroponics kits is that growers want to separate the plant environment from the human environment outside of the room.
For example, hydroponic kits that release odors into a business space are going to be a nuisance for those working in that space. The same holds true for residential spaces, where you don't want hydroponic garden is to compromise the other parts of the space for inhabitants.
By using modern carbon filters, growers can keep all of plants internal atmosphere inside the enclosed compact grow area. This is the major value of these kinds of accessories, which are important parts of many growing kits. They may not have a particular role in plant growth, but they are still a valuable part of providing for grow maintenance.
