Do I Need Pre-Fab Grow Equipment?

When starting out on a hydroponics project, there are a few important questions that every particular grower must ask themselves individually. One of these has to do with the difference between pre-formed and specially designed hydroponics products and DIY solutions that a grower ‘manufactures’ alone.

While lots of growers have a philosophical agenda when it comes to their equipment, the reality is that buying choices are something that really has to be addressed on a case-by-case basis – there are pros and cons for either side of this argument, and it’s important to really assess exactly what your project will need before making final decisions.

DIY and Low-cost Equipment

In some cases, it’s intuitively simple to understand that growers can save money by going with partial DIY solutions. For example, growers cite the high cost of ready-made plant pots when they can make their own plant containers out of relatively simple materials. However, you also have to think about how well this homemade equipment will withstand the pressures of one or more plant cycles. Cheap plastics can easily crack or degrade over time, and that can lead to floods or other disasters in your hydroponics grow area.

A Piecemeal Approach

It’s important for those with skepticism about hydroponics equipment to understand that hydroponics retailers will work with you to achieve your goals – it may be okay to pursue a DIY solution for one component of a grow system in order to save a bit of cash, while getting some of the more high powered equipment available from the retailer to boost your chances of success with a hydroponics project. Talk to retailer representatives about how many plants you’ll be growing, what the environment in your grow area is like, and all of the other aspects that will determine your particular needs for hydroponics gear and equipment.
