Is It Possible to End World Hunger with Hydroponics?

Posted

World hunger is a serious issue and is being taken seriously within the greater global community. The World Health Organization and other groups continue to monitor conditions all over the world including the phenomenon of famine and how agricultural interruptions, poverty and other factors affect world communities. One issue is simply the number of people that need to be fed and a finite amount of arable land or other resources.

Role of Hydroponics in Solving World Hunger

In some parts of the hydroponics community, growers feel that hydroponics is not relevant to the task of feeding the world’s entire population. Some see hydroponics projects as being irrelevant or geared toward a smaller and more particular user group with specific applications that may not fit with the needs of larger impoverished and hungry communities in Third World nations or even in first world countries.

Others, however, believe that hydroponics has a role to play in feeding the world. By being able to grow food in smaller footprints or in previously unusable spaces, hydroponics supports a greater ability of leveraging resources to feed more people. There’s also the idea of growing food locally in small, advanced hydroponic garden designs, rather than shipping it long distances to meet the needs of large-scale populations.

The debate about world hunger is one that’s likely to continue for quite a while. Do your own research and see how the most innovative agricultural methods may help to fight world hunger in the future.
