There are a lot of easy grow boxes on the market to help you set up full plant cycles, but what about the adventurous grower who wants to add DIY solutions to a conventional grow box?
Here are some of the common ways that we've seen growers “hack” a grow box by adding specific techniques to one of these conventional grow kits.
Changing Deep Water Culture or Tubing Techniques
Some grow boxes come with a deep reservoir where plants roots sit directly in the water. In these cases, growers sometimes “hack” a grow box by putting trays higher up above the water, and introducing tubing to run nutrient water through plant pots.
The opposite is also true -- some grow boxes come with the tubing method that will deliver the nutrient water at regular intervals. Growers can hack the system by lowering the trays into the deep reservoir.
Foliar Feeding
One of the most popular grow hacks with grow boxes today is the use of foliar feeding techniques to deliver more nutrients to plants. Some growers use these in emergencies where the reservoir or tubing method just isn't supplying enough nutrients. But others use it to turbocharge plant growth and deliver plants with heartier, thicker stems, bigger footprints and more abundant fruit.
With foliar feeding, growers simply apply a mist or spray to extrenal surfaces of the plant. Plants ingest this nutrient-rich moisture through small glands called stomata, and unusual growth can result.
Adding CO2
Another popular grow hack for hydroponics is to use a CO2 add-on. Adding more carbon dioxide under the right conditions can springboard the growth of plants and lead to bigger and more impressive harvests.
Cloning
Another technique that many growers use involves cutting portions from live plants and introducing them to the grow box as clones. These plants are very vulnerable, because they don't have developed root systems. However, some growers can take a conventional grow box and renovate it to make it into a perfect haven for cloned plants, to nurture them in all stages of development as they grow toward eventual harvest.
These are just some of the effective DIY techniques for turning a regular grow box into a super grow space. Look for more support and equipment from qualified manufacturers and retailers to get what you need out of a hydroponics project.
